Artist's Comments

This was started at work last Thursday night, when I drew the Replacements fan (pose based on Paul Westerberg's pose on the cover of their "Let It Be" album). I carried it on when I was back in work last night (Tuesday), and I finished it off when I got home from work on Wednesday morning.

Basically it's the kind of party I'd love to go to, the kind that doesn't actually exist. Buncha people sitting round listening to cool music, getting drunk and stoned, and the occasional fight breaking out. There's a few jokes that people might only get if they have more than a passing knowledge of the kinds of music referenced in the piece:

- The pumpkin and cuddly toy in the Sonic Youth Worship Corner are from the covers of their "Bad Moon Rising" and "Dirty" LPs respectively (also notice the banner reading "WWSYD?" instead of "WWJD?")
- The Bad Religion Dictionary Corner is a reference (with thanks/apologies to Mitch Clem's Nothing Nice To Say comics) to the fact that Greg Graffin's lyrics are occasionally (always) utterly insane, featuring such confusing wordplay that you picture people needing to take dictionaries and thesauri to Bad Religion gigs. If anybody can tell me what "Phantasmal myriads of sane bucolic birth" means, I'd appreciate it. Similarly, someone explain "Inchoate beatitude, the Lord of the Flies".
- The three LPs next to the Replacements fan are the aforementioned "Let It Be" (top), Sonic Youth's "Goo" (middle) and Husker Du's "Zen Arcade" (bottom). Also, he's sitting on copies of MaximumRockN'Roll, one of the most respected punk rock fanzines ever.
- The stoner girl watching the static-filled TV is wearing a Soundgarden "TOTAL FUCKING GODHEAD" t-shirt (if anybody knows where I can pick one of those up, I'll marry you).
- The slamdancing Black Flag fan wearing the tank top is a thinly-veiled caricature of Henry Rollins (but don't tell Henry that, he'll kick the shit out of me). Notice the "PUNX" tattoo and the straight-edge cross on his hands.
- How many people are wearing fuckin' Chuck Taylors in this?
- Have a close look at the smoke above Stoners' Corner. Also, each of the bands on their shirts have some link to weed: Kyuss were legendary stoners, you need to be stoned to get any semblance of musicality out of Flipper, and Pearl Jam have long been advocates of the green.
- The dude who's partied out is another thinly-veiled caricature: this time, it's of me.
- I always wanted a Smeg fridge.
- Hey! It's Fletch and Blake from Mitch Clem's Nothing Nice To Say! I had to put these guys in. Mitch, if you ever see this, I know my versions of your creations suck, but it was about 3.30am and I was alternating between drawing them and working.
- The songs being played on the three stereos are -- from left to right -- "I Will Dare" by the Replacements, "Supersonic" by Bad Religion and "My War" by Black Flag.
- A free piece of candy for anyone who can tell me what the poster above Fletch's (the bald guy) head is of.

Wow, I talked about that too much.
